Eight years ago Mike Posner released a song called "Top of the World."
This week he's really there.
Late Tuesday, June 1, the Grammy Award-nominated pop star from Southfield announced that he and his team had scaled to the summit of Mount Everest, a climb he embarked upon to raise money for the Detroit Justice Center.
The Birmingham Groves High School graduate posted a social media message saying that he and his compatriots -- Dawa Chirring Sherpa, Jon Kedrowski and Dawa Dorje Sherpa -- reached the peak at 4:35 a.m. "That's what I call a sunrise," Posner, 33, wrote. "We are now back at camp 2 but not out of the woods until we descend to base camp tomorrow am. Please keep us in your prayers."
Posner became interested in high altitude climbing after completing a walk across America during the spring of 2019. He spent much of the past year and a half training, with Everest as a goal.
Announcing the climb in April, Posner said that, "While my walk across America was about me finding myself, I want my climb to be about others." The climb was dedicated to his late father Jon Posner, a prominent criminal defense attorney in the metro area. "I've decided to dedicate my climb to the Detroit Justice Center because they're doing criminal justice reform work in my city that would make my dad beam with joy," Posner wrote.
So far his initiative, via a GoFundMe page and corporate sponsorship, has raised nearly $225,000 of his $250,000 goal.
Posner has released six albums since 2009, including last year's "Operation: Wake Up." Earlier this year he released a new single, "Momma Always Told Me," featuring Stanaj and Yung Bae, while his 2010 single "Please Don't Go" is being used as a theme song for the TikTok #PleaseDonTog challenge. Posner has also written hits for Maroon 5, Justin Bieber and Labrinth, among others, and was nominated for a Grammy Award for his 2015 single "I Took a Pill in Ibiza."
During May Posner released a new single, "Jealousy," a collaboration with his Mansionz partner blackbear and co-written with Bieber. It followed another single, "Momma Always Told Me," that Posner released earlier in the year.
