Diversity and inclusivity are the watchwords for this year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 2021 nominations ballot

In addition to seven first-timers, the shortlist of 16 includes nine artists of color and seven women. Making first appearances on the ballot are Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Iron Maiden, the Go-Go's, Mary J. Blige, Dionne Warwick and Fela Kuti.

Returning nominees include Kate Bush, Devo, Chaka Khan, Carole King, the New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Todd Rundgren, Tina Turner and LL Cool J who, with five previous nods, is the longest-lived name on the ballot.

The nominees will be voted on by a body of more than 1,000 artists and members of the music industry. The Rock Hall has also opened its fan vote via rockhall.com and at the museum in Cleveland; Those votes will be tallied to comprise an additional ballot that will be counted among the others.

The inductees will be announced during May, with the ceremony slated to take place this fall in Cleveland. Last year's event was canceled and held as an HBO special during November.

Three of this year's nominees are already in the Rock Hall: Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl as a member of Nirvana; Tina Turner as part of Ike & Tina Turner; and Carole King with her songwriting partner and ex-husband Gerry Goffin. Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks is the only other woman who's been inducted twice.

The timing is particular fortuitous for three of the acts. Foo Fighters released a new album, "Medicine at Midnight," on Feb. 5, the same day the Go-Go's released their self-titled documentary on home video and On Demand. Rundgren, meanwhile, kicks off a virtual concert tour on Sunday, Feb. 14.
