Quarantined at home like everybody else, Suzi Quatro is getting into the spirit of the season.
The Grosse Pointe-raised singer, songwriter and actress, who now resides in England, has released a lush, soulful single "My Heart and Soul (I Need You Home For Christmas)" via music streaming services, along with a companion video featuring home movie clips from her childhood.
"Lockdown had just begun," Quatro, 70, says in a statement about the song. "My son was in the studio working on ideas every day for our next album, a perfect opportunity as neither of us was 'on the road.' I was sitting on the patio, relaxing, and heard this absolutely beautiful track coming out of the open studio door. It was a bass line, with a sparse guitar chord, and drums. It was immediate for me.
"I ran into the studio (mask on of course), and told my son to set up a microphone, and without thinking, without writing anything down, I sang the first four lines of the song exactly as they ended up. That`s when you know you have a great song..."
The song's Motown flavor, meanwhile, also nods to Quatro's musical roots. "I am a Motown fanatic," she said during an interview earlier this year. "I can still do all the Temptations routines! (laughs) And as a bass player, of course, I modeled myself on (James) Jamerson. There's nobody better, right?"
"My Heart and Soul" comes at the end of what's been an eventual year for Quatro, who played with her sisters in the bands Cradle and the Pleasure Seekers before moving to England during the early 70s to start a solo career that includes hits such as "Can the Can," "48 Crash" and "If You Can't Give Me Love." While continuing to promote her 2019 album "No Control" Quatro also put the documentary "Suzie Q," into wide release as well as home video sales.
She's currently planning to return to the road during April in Europe and is planning to publish a book of her song lyrics during 2021.
