Homegrown Happenings: Jam For Sudan, B'Jazz Vespers, Overloaded and Ugly
* The Go and the Hentchmen are among several local groups playing Saturday's (Oct. 20) Jam For Sudan, a benefit at Detroit's Majestic Theatre to raise funds to aid in the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. Organized by the MIchigan Darfur Coalition, proceeds from the show will go to organizations assisting the 2.5 million people who are living in displacement camps as a result of genocidal civil war. Saturday's bill also includes the Muldoons, Zoos of Berlin, the Sisters Lucas, the Beggars and Sweet Japonic. A "preglow" at 7 p.m. will feature a silent auction, while doors open for the show at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15. The Majestic is located at 4120 Woodward Ave.. * The monthly B'Jazz Vespers series continues Sunday (Oct. 21) with the Paul VornHagen Jazz Quartet, featuring guest vocalist Judi Cochill. The concert will be held at the First Baptist Church, 300 Willits St., Birmingham. Admission is free but donations will be solicited for the musicians. * A couple of Local hard rock bands will celebrate the release of their new CDs in the coming week at the Token Lounge in Westland. Overloaded, which won a WRIF-FM contest in June to open for Godsmack, will play songs from its new "Regeneration" Friday (Oct. 19), topping a bill that includes Slave to the Beautiful, Primortal and Goiter Jelly. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $7. On Thursday (Oct. 25), Ugly makes hey about the national release of its self-titled debut CD. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $1.01.
