The live music business may be largely shut down for traveling artists, but it will revive a bit on Thursday night, Aug. 13, in Rochester.
The Royal Park Hotel, in partnership with Lake Orion's 20 Front Street, will host what it's calling a "vertical concert," featuring Nashville - and Kentucky-based singer-songwriters Mathew Austin Bell, Jobe Fortner, Jesse Wayne Taylor and Matt Daniel. A socially distanced crowd will listen from the hotel's Park 600 terrace and from private room balconies overlooking the stage.
Tickets are sold out. Other pandemic protocols, including face masks and limited food service, will be in place.
The quartet, which will perform an in-the-round style show trading off songs, were originally scheduled to perform at 20 Front Street on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 13-14.
"We were trying to think outside the box and create opportunities for the artists whose concerts at 20 Front Street were canceled," venue owner Allan Goetz says. He notes that the vertical concert format "has been gaining momentum in other countries...to offer a physical distancing alternative for a live music experience...The Royal Park Hotel's suites with balconies and Park 600 terrace provie a perfect view of an outdoor stage."
Goetz says 20 Front Street is hoping to partner with the Royal Park on more vertical concerts once there's a chance to evaluate the first event. 20 Front Street currently has concerts booked for September.
The concert will also mark the debut of a new Maker's Mark Private Select Barrel Rochester Reserve done exclusively for the Royal Park. Some proceeds from the show will be going to the Karmanos Cancer Institute.
