A Fine Frenzy Is A Person -- And Her Music

Of the Oakland Press

A Fine Frenzy is not a band; rather, it’s the name Alison Sudol has given to “the music that I create.”

“The reason for the separation is I want people, when they listen, to hear it through their own experience and their own viewpoint rather than listening to it through what I wrote it for,” explains the 22-year-old singer and pianist, who graduated high school in Los Angeles when she was 16 and began crafting the songs for her debut album, “One Cell in the Sea,” two years later.

“After I write it, I kind of give it away for other people. You don’t know what people are going to get out of it, how they’re going to receive you — or if they’re going to receive you. So I think it’s easier for me to kind of let it go than to try and ... control it.”

Sudol says she also employs the A Fine Frenzy moniker as a kind of safeguard against music industry typecasting — “especially,” she notes, “for female artists.”

“There’s just that whole female going by the first and last name that stigmatizes you and you’re instantly stuck in a certain category,” says Sudol, whose airy arrangements and literary-styled lyrics are often compared to acts such as Keane, Radiohead and Aqualung. “I wanted to stay away from that.

“I never do things just to be different. I’ve never been into that. There has to be a reason, and for me having a (name other than her own) seems like the most effective way to present my music.”

VH1’s You Oughta Know Tour 2007, featuring Brandi Carlile and A Fine Frenzy, stops Sunday (Oct. 14) at St. Andrew’s Hall, 431 E. Congress St., downtown Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call (313) 961-6358 or visit www.livenation.com.
