Interview:
Canadian Rockers Changed Course While Making New Album

Canadian modern rockers Hot Hot Heat changed tacts during the making of its new album.

Frontman Steve Bays says the quintet from Victoria, B.C., started writing songs for “Happiness Ltd.” as it began touring for its 2005 sophomore release, “Elevator.” The idea, he explains, was to make “this very indie, live-sounding album.” But once in the studio, Hot Hot Heat took a different course.

“We realized we liked the songs that had a little bit more depth to them and were bigger sounding,” Bays, 29, says. “Then we started to write some new songs. We had already handed (the other album) in, so we called the label and said ‘Take it back.’

“So we went from this very indie, livesounding album to this really big-sounding record. Oh well ...”

A further irony, Bays notes, is that “Happiness Ltd.” came out of a time when he was not particularly happy — and, he says, “kind of questioning if I even wanted to make rock music anymore, period.”

“I think that was me entering my late ’20s combined with heartbreak combined with ... whatever else,” he says with a laugh. “There was a good six months out a year when I was searching for a sign of what the next stage was gonna be.

“In the end, I realized the only thing I can come back to and always rely on is the guys in the band. If anything, I think we’re even tighter now as buddies and as a gang than we were before.”
