Naked Magicians don't have much up their sleeves, or sleeves at all

When your act's called the Naked Magicians, there's not a lot left to the imagination. And not a lot of sleeves for something to be up.

"Good magicians don't need sleeves. Great magicians don't need pants. We really believe that," Christopher Wayne, half of the Australian duo, says by phone.

Part strip show, part magic act, Wayne and performing partner Mike Tyler have been working together for more than six years after establishing their own separate acts. "We were magicians first and were just friends," Wayne, 33, says. "Then the movie 'Magic Mike' came out, and people started calling (Tyler) Magic Mike and making all these silly jokes, like, 'How big is your wand?' and it was driving him bonkers.

"Then we had a conversation -- 'Has anyone done a naughty magic show? Hmmm....'"

Thus the Naked Magicians were born and have gone on to play more than 340 cities around the world and is "going stronger than ever." The duo dazzles with tricks and comedic wit, and there's plenty of audience interaction that puts the pair at some degree of risk for return naughtiness from the crowd.

"We've been kind of lucky considering it's all drunk women and gay men -- a bit of a party," Wayne says. "We've had two women make out, whole-hog on stage. We had one woman tie Mike up in a straightjacket at one show -- and we didn't know she was a dominatrix, so it was just hilarious.

"Every single night something happens, and we're always, 'How did we not see that coming?' But that keeps it interesting, y'know?"

The Naked Magicians perform at 7 p.m. Friday, March 6, and 7 and 10 p.m. Saturday, March 7 at the Music Hall Center, 350 Madison Ave., Detroit. $39 and up. 313-887-8500 or musichall.org
