Detroit will help provide a kickoff for the music portion of the South By Southwest Music + Media Conference next month in Austin, Texas.
Detroit Drives Culture will showcase six performers -- Thornetta Davis, B Free, lucylujah, Mynah, Willy J Peso and Raye Williams -- on March 17 in the Townsend in Austin's downtown area. Problematicblackhottie will provide DJ breaks between their sets.
Organizers call the event "a springboard for an annual showcase that will grow larger each year and included legacy artists." The showcase is sponsored by the City of Detroit, the North American International Auto Show, Motown Music Accelerator and others.
A dozen Detroit acts have been designated as official showcasing artists at SXSW this year. In addition to the Detroit Drives Culture artists, the area will also be represented in Austin by Hala, Mike Melinoe, Deadbeat Beat, Anna Burch, Shadow Show, Dogleg and Mira Farenheit. Other Michigan acts showcasing include SXSW veterans the Accidentals from Traverse City, Ann Arbor's MYNA, Aramis616 from Grand Rapids, Michigander from Kalamazoo, Tobin Sprout from Leland and Cloud Rat From Mount Pleasant.
