It's been a quick rise for Trippie Redd.

At just 20, the Canton-born rapper, who's now based in Los Angeles, has released two albums, both of which debuted in the Top 5 of the Billboard 200. He's also dropped five mixtapes along with platinum singles such as "Poles 1469," "Love Scars," "Dark Night Dummo" and "Topanga." He's also made guest appearances with Machine Gun Kelly, XXXTentaciion, Rich the Kid, Lil Yachty and many more.

There's more to come, promises Redd (real name Michael White IV), including some projects that will likely surprise the faithful...

Redd says that rap is in his DNA. "My family raps -- my uncle, my dad, my brother (the late Dirty Redd), my cousins. They all made music; I just wanted to do the same thing. So every time I was around them I'd be rapping, too, and I'm just the one who took off."

As far as developing a style, Redd explains that he's "versatile. I listen to all genres, any music. I'm studying it -- not like it's homework, but listening and trying to study people's works and then do my own thing. I listen to a lot of rock music -- Dance Gavin Dance, Red Jumpsuit Aparatus, Deftones, Team Sleep, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Marilyn Manson. I like melodic rock, like Jimmy Eat World or Sparta or Green Day. It all factors into what I do."

On the horizon, Redd says that he's "working on three or four albums right now. I have a rock album with Travis Barker (of blink-182) which is really inspired; He mainly sends over the beats and I do the song by myself. So there's that and a bunch of other stuff. You'll be hearing a lot from me.

Trippie Redd, BlocBoy, Kodie Shane and JB perform on Friday, Feb. 14, at the Fillmore Detroit, 2115 Woodward Ave. Doors at 7 p.m. $32-$77.50. 313-961-5451 or thefillmoredetroit.com.
