Interview:
Dave Koz and Summer Horns at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre, 5 Things to Know

Six years ago Dave Koz came up with an idea -- "Summer Horns," collaboration with some of his favorite other saxophonists. Suffice to say it's had legs -- and lungs.

Last year, Koz -- who's also a syndicated national radio host as well as a wine-marker who recently launched a new rose -- released a "Summer Horns II: For A to Z," featuring tour partners Gerald Albright, Rick Braun, Kenny Lattimore and Aubrey Logan. The set debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Current Contemporary Jazz Chart, and the troupe toured last year and is at it again this summer.

Koz is circumspect about whether it will happen a third time, but he's more than happy to blow his own horn, and others', about the virtues of Summer Horns...

Koz says by phone that a second Summer Horns project was not necessarily guaranteed. "I think in the beginning people didn't know what to make of it -- 'Summer Horns? What is that?' Then we did the tour and that was really successful, and the (album) was nominated for a Grammy. We did another tour the next year and then we took a hiatus, and I wasn't 100 percent sure we'd do anything again. Then these creative ideas start from the feet and work your way up to the brain and one day you say, 'It's time we do another Summer Horns.' This time with some different players and different instrumentation, like trumpet and trombone, which gave us an opportunity to try a whole bunch of new ideas and expand our horizons."

Koz says there are no plans yet for a third Summer Horns, but he knows better than to rule it out. "If you'd asked me five years ago, six years ago, when we did the first one if there was going to be a second one, I'd have said I have no idea. And I'll say the same thing now. But I can tell you we've all been around a long time, so right now we operate on the fun quotient and how to have as much fun as we can have. It's not as much about making money or trying to scale new heights in our careers -- we've done that already. At this point it's really about what's fun for us and what's fun for our audience. So given that, I would say, yes, there's a good chance we'll do a third album. But I don't know when."

Koz, meanwhile, is also hatching plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his self-titled debut album next year, including some new recordings and special shows. "It's gone by in a blaze, like a flash point. It's unbelievably how quickly it's gone by. I've enjoyed it, too. I've really enjoyed myself and loved every aspect of it -- even some of the mistakes or some of the things that we tried that flopped. It's all part of the puzzle, every piece of it. I just hope we can continue to do this for a lot longer, and I don't take it for granted."

Dave Koz's Summer Horns -- featuring Gerald Albright, Rick Braun, Kenny Lattimore, Aubrey Logan and Adam Howley -- performs at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30 in the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill, 14900 Metropolitan Parkway at Schoenherr, Sterling Heights. $49 and up. 313-471-7000 or 313Presents.com.
