Addison Agen may seem to be coming out of nowhere to open four of Bob Seger's six upcoming shows at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, but the youthful singer-songwriter does have a track record.

Singing in church since she was five and learning piano at seven and guitar at nine, the 18-year-old from Fort Wayne, Ind., was the runner-up in Season 13 of "The Voice," coached by Adam Levine. She's received a Governor's Arts Award for Emerging Artists and made an album, too -- but was dissatisfied and scrapped it and is currently working on more material.

Agen will be graduating from high school in December, but she's already in career mode with music and plans to be someone who's heard, and heard about, for years to come...

With a father who owns a record store and is a musician and a mother who's a musical therapist and worship leader, it's fair to say music is in Agen's blood. "My brother plays bass, too, so it's literally everywhere. It's weird to me that some families don't sing together or play music all together. That's just what I grew up doing, all the time."

Being on "The Voice," Agen says, was "really cool. I had never experienced anything like that before. I had never been on a plane before, and I spent a year flying back and forth between Fort Wayne and L.A. I didn't expect to even pass the very first-call open audition; There's, like, six or seven auditions before you even get to the point where you're in front of the four coaches. I was pushing myself as hard as I could but had no expectations about where I would land. But people liked it, so I guess it was where I was supposed to be. I kept it simple and did 'me.' It was all I could ask for to even be around those people."

Despite her experiences, Agen says performing live "terrifies me. It's not something I enjoy a lot. My main passion is really being a songwriter. But I know singing is a gift that I've been given, and to be able to do that you have to perform, so I'm pushing myself and learning and trying to get more comfortable with it. The music for me is the easy part; It's the talking in-between, which I didn't have to do on 'The Voice'."

Nevertheless, Agen is "thrilled" about the prospect of opening for Seger in his home town. "He wasn't someone I grew up listening to, but I've definitely heard all his oldies. He's one of those musicians who you just know his songs without realizing they're his songs because they're so iconic. You can't not know them. And he's an incredible songwriter, an incredible storyteller. I've been listening to him a lot more recently. I went to one of his concerts in Fort Wayne unaware I'd be opening for him and was blown away."

Back in Fort Wayne Agen is focusing on writing songs with plans to take another stab at making an album. "The past eight or nine months has just been 100 percent writing, constantly, all the time, just building my repertoire so I can make an album where Im just in love with all the songs and extremely proud of them and saying exactly what I want to say. I want to make the right introduction to the world for my original music, 'cause people haven't heard much at all. The album I recorded, I didn't really enjoy the music and it didnt' sound how I wanted to, so I want to make this one better."

Addison Agen opens for Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band perform June 6, 8, 12 and 14 at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, Sashabaw Road east of I-75, Independence Township. Tickets are sold out. Call 313-471-7000 or visit 313Presents.com
