P!nk makes up for lost time with Little Caesars show

DETROIT -- After postponing due to health issues, P!nk made her metro area fans wait 13 months to see her Beautiful Trauma World Tour.



And over the weekend she made the wait more than worthwhile.



The pop singer and activist made good with not one but two concerts at Little Caesars Arena, closing the short stand on Saturday, April 27, with a high-flying (literally) hour and 50-minute spectacle that, well, flew by in impressively flawless fashion. It was the kind of show that should be packaged up and sold as Pop Diva 101, the kind of performance any artist -- female OR male, really -- should aspire to in terms of balance, with the perfect ratio between visual entertainment and artistic potency, as well as pacing. Even veterans such as Madonna or Cher could take a lesson from what P!nk did on stage Saturday -- not that they should strap themselves into trapeze harnesses, as P!nk did several times during her show.



Those were, in fact the Moments that elevated the Beautiful Trauma show a notch above most of P!nk's peers. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and many others may employ airborne stunts during their concerts, but rise to the level of the advance ariel work that P!nk employs -- opening the night by flitting around a chandelier above the stage during "Get the Party Started," executing elaborate choreography with one of her 10 dancers during "Secrets" and, with "So What," flying all the way around the arena, even hovering at the very top level.



All of that was accompanied by plenty of scenery changes on stage, elaborate dance routines -- with seven-year-old daughter Willow turning a few roundoffs during "Raise Your Glass" -- more than a dozen costume changes, a tasteful amount of pyrotechnics and, of course, a confetti shower. A three-story-high Eminem also rolled up the runway during "Revenge," only to be head-kicked by a flying P!nk. And P!nk sidestepped the usual self-aggrandizement that comes with most of these kind of shows, and even when she did thumping her chest (and then just a bit) it was in service of an otherwise positive, and necessary film message about female empowerment.



P!nk also made a statement about her music merit on Saturday, delivering 21 songs from her eight albums -- including two, "Walk Me Home" and "Hustle," from the new "Hurts 2B Human," just out on Friday, April 26. Her versatile eight-piece band kept the arrangements tight and the pace flowing, with powerful renditions of "Try" and "For Now" and even gathering at the point of the arrow-shaped stage for "Barbies" and "I Am Here." "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" was a buoyant disco party, while "Glitter in the Air" ended the night with a bit of poignant restraint.



It may have taken awhile to get P!nk back in these parts, but Saturday's was the kind of show that will be spoken about for some time -- and only whet the appetite to have her come back through again.
