Detroit's Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre will showcase plenty of music during its first season under that name.
The riverside venue, previously the Chene Park Amphitheatre, has announced an initial slate of 20 summer concerts going on sale Friday. The offerings including its traditional Jazzy Nights series on Wednesdays along with a selection of feature shows on weekend -- and more to be announced, according to organizers.
Things get under way June 1 with a show by Detroit singer KEM as part of Tom Joyner's One More Time Experience. Also on the docket are: Charlie Wilson and Lalah Hathaway on June 15-16; Maxwell and Corinne Bailey Rae, July 27; UB40 and Steel Pulse, Aug. 2; Lost 80s Live with A Flock of Seagulls, The Tubes, the Motels and more, Aug. 9; Anthony Hamilton, Ledisi and Tweet, Aug. 10; and Gladys Knight and Will Downing, Aug. 11.
The Jazzy Nights shows, meanwhile, begin with Damien Escobar on June 5 and continue with: Jonathan Butler and Kirk Whalum, June 12; Kenny G, June 19; Black Violin, June 26; Loose Ends and Rahsaan Patterson, July 3; Superstars of Jazz Fusion featuring Roy Ayers, Miki Howard and Lonnie Liston Smith, July 10; Robert Glasper and Christian Scott, July 17; PJ Morton and Dwele, July 24; Najee, July 31; Rose Royce and Con Funk Shun, August 7; Double Vision Revisited featuring Bob James, David Sanborn and Marcus Miller with Billy Kilson and Larry Braggs, August 14; and Michael Franks, August 21.
