Homegrown Happenings: Paxahau, Mussel Beach and New Music Detroit

Paxahau Promotions Group, which produces dance parties around the metro area, as well as the annual Movement electronic music festival, celebrates its ninth anniversary Saturday (Sept. 1) at two Detroit venues. From 2-10 p.m., DJs such as Stacey Pullen, Matthew Dear, John Arnold and more will spin at Hoots on the Avenue, 1460 Michigan Ave. in Corktown. At 10, the party shifts to Bleu Nightclub, 1540 Woodward Ave., for sets by Shawn Michaels, Matt Clarke and Drew Maddox, as well as the German techno duo Hardfloor. Admission is $10 in advance, $15 at the door for both events or $20 at the door for the Bleu show only. The Cadieux Cafe will mussel summer to a close with its annual three-day Mussel Beach Party. The Jettisons and Projektgift play Friday (Aug. 31), Tone and Niche and the Wednesdees perform Saturday (Sept. 1) and the Muggs in their final show of the year before hitting the studio to record their second album join Serenity Court and the Crooks on Sunday (Sept. 2). The music starts at 10 each night at the Cafe, 4300 Cadieux Road, Detroit. Admission is $5 for 21-plus, $10 for those under 21. Call (313) 882-8560 or visit www.cadieuxcafe.com. The Muggs also play at 10 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 1) on the Miller Lite Stage at Arts, Beats & Eats in Pontiac.

New Music Detroit, a collective that features members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and other local musicians, will hold a 12-hour Strange Beautiful Music marathon Saturday (Sept. 1) at the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit, 5141 Rosa Parks Blvd., Detroit. The program will feature performances of works by new composers, including Nico Muhly, Alexandra DuBois, Philip Glass and John Cage, as well as Q&A sessions.
