Sarah Borges has had a productive first 13 years as a recording artist.

During that time the Boston-based rocker -- both a solo artist and leader of the band the Broken Singles -- has released five albums and an EP. Earlier this year she and the group put out "Love's Middle Name," a gritty, stomping set that has the Broken Singles on the road steadily, though getting ready for a break after this weekend's run through the Midwest...

• Borges says by phone that with "Love's Middle Name" she "wanted to make a pretty live-sounding record, something that sounded like a live show. We've tried to do that in the past, but I don't know if we always succeeded. But Roscoe (producer Eric Ambel) is pretty good at capturing that. He doesn't put a lot of overdubs or other crap on there. He really gets the band playing together, which is great."

• That sonic goal had an impact on the songs Borges wrote for the album as well. "Sometimes I write songs I know will be fun to play live. I know what it takes -- just for my band, not any other. I understand what it takes for us to have a song that works live. It can't be too hard to play (laughs), and obviously fast-paced songs work better. And if they're good for harmony singing, those are a plus, too."

• "Love's Middle Name" is the third billed as Borges and the Broken Singles, though the group's sole other member is single-monikered bassist Binky. "It's always had various members," she says, "but it'll always be the Broken Singles so long as Binky is with me. He's been with me from the beginning -- I can't believe he's not sick of me yet. We're best friends. We've done things for a really long time together, probably about 15 years. He's a great musician, a great guy on stage. I've been to other countries he's been to with me, and people ask for him."

Sarah Borges & the Broken Singles perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at PJ’s Lager House, 1254 Michigan Ave., Detroit. Ryan Racine & the Gashounds open. $8 advance, $10 at the door. 313-961-4668 or pjslagerhouse.com.
