Aretha Franklin to be celebrated at free Chene Park show

Nearly 30 all-star performers will take part in a free concert paying tribute to the late Aretha Franklin the night before her funeral.

The Four Tops, Gladys Knight, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Johnny Gill, Angie Stone and Kimmie Horne are among those who will perform at the show, which takes place at 6 p.m. Aug. 30 at Detroit's Chene Park Amphitheatre. Tickets will start being distributed at 10 a.m. Aug. 27 via Ticketsmaster.com; The company is waiving its usual fees, and fans will be able to get a maximum of two tickets each.

The Ralphe Armstrong Band and Kern Brantley Band will be accompanying the singers. More information is available at cheneparkdetroit.com.

The concert will be part of a four-day memorial that includes public viewings on Aug. 28-29 at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and on Thursday, Aug. 30, at New Bethel Baptist Church. The funeral on Friday, Aug. 31, at Greater Grace Temple is for friends, family and invited guests only and will feature performances by Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Faith Hill, Jennifer Holiday, Chaka Khan, Ron Isley and others will be performing during the ceremony.

Franklin, known as the Queen of Soul, died on Aug. 16 at the age of 76 from pancreatic cancer.
