All-star Aretha Franklin tribute slated for March in New York
Aretha Franklin will be celebrated by an all-star lineup of fellow musicians next year in New York City.
Kenny Loggins, Ann Wilson of Heart, Todd Rundgren, Melissa Etheridge and fellow Michigander Bettye LaVette are among those who will be performing at "The Music of Aretha Franklin," taking place March 6 at Carnegie Hall. The show is part of a continuing series of events by promoter Michael Dorf, who has presented similar tribute concerts to David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Prince and others.
Proceeds from the show go to music education programs for underprivileged youths.
Other artists on the bill include Taj Mahal, Living Colour, Antibalas, Glen Hansard, Sarah Dash, Rhiannon Giddens and Allen Stone, with more expected to be announced.
Known as the Queen of Soul, the 74-year-old Franklin, who resides in Bloomfield Hills, has won 18 Grammy Awards and was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She recently made headlines for her long, emotive rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Detroit Lions football game on Thanksgiving Day at Ford Field.
