Some tragic circumstances will lead to a farewell tour for the Tragically Hip this year.

The Canadian rock group, which made Detroit one of its early U.S. strongholds -- recording the 1997 concert album "Live Between Us" at Cobo Arena -- has announced that frontman Gordon Downie was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer in December. He'll join the band for one last tour this summer, with dates announced at a press conference Tuesday morning (May 24) in Toronto, where Downie's doctor will also speak about the singer's condition.

In a statement the band says, "This feels like the right thing to do now, for Gord, and for all of us. What we in the Hip receive, each time we play together, is a connection; with each other; with music and it's magic; and during the shows, a special connection with all of you, our incredible fans. So, we're going to dig deep, and try to make this our best tour yet."

The statement also said that Downie, 52 -- who has four children with wife Laura Leigh usher -- has "endured a lot of difficult times, and he has been fighting hard...and through all of this, we've been standing by him."

The Tragically Hip was founded during 1984 in Kingston, Ontario, and has released a dozen studio albums with a another, "Man Machine Poem," due out this year. The group has won 14 Juno Awards, the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy. On his own Downie has released three solo albums and has acted in the movies "Men With Brooks," "The Big Dirty" and "One Week" and on the TV show "Corner Gas"
