The local blues quartet Michael May & the Mess-Arounds — whose drummer, Brian Deming, is the younger brother of guitarist Doug Deming — will celebrate the release of its first CD, the coversheavy “Bring on the Heat,” Friday (June 1st) at Memphis Smoke, 100 S. Steel drums will be the heavy metal of choice at Saturday’s (June 2nd) second annual Michigan Steel Drum Festival, a 12-hour celebration that starts at 2 p.m. at Hockeytown Cafe, 2301 Woodward Ave., Detroit. This year’s lineup includes Uprizin, the Southpaw Isle Steelband, the Gratitude Steel Band, Steelheads Steelband, Third Coast Steel, the Pan-Jumbies from Oakland University, the St. Louis High School Steel Drum Band and the Caribbean Pans of Joy Steelband. Jazz bassist Rodney Whitaker, who’s also Michigan State University’s director of jazz studies, joins forces with drummer Carl Allen will play tunes from their new album, “Get Ready,” Friday (June 1st) at Cliff Bell’s, 2030 Park Ave., Detroit.
