Ferndale singer-songwriter Michael Bermudez admits he's faced frustration with his music career "every day."

But he's having some fun right now, thanks to a friend from fun.

"Never Let Me Go," a song from Bermudez's upcoming album "Love & Let Downs," is making noise thanks to a remix by Andrew Dost, a Royal Oak resident and one of the three members of the Grammy Award-winning pop group fun. The two have known each other for a few years (Bermudez went to college with Dost's wife), and the collaboration was as offhanded as it was easy.

"I had hired a radio team to push the song, and they asked if I knew anybody who could do a remix," recalls Bermudez, 28, a Royal Oak Dondero High School and Wayne State University graduate who plays Friday, March 6, at the Berkley Front. "I was talking to a few other people, and I saw Andrew out one night and he said he'd be interested in doing a remix.

"I sent him the (song) and kind of forgot about it. A couple months went by and I got an e.mail and that was that. I loved it and we talked about it some more and I got another e.mail with a revision, and it was great."

The fleshed-out and prettified version of "Never Let Me Go" is certainly getting some attention. It's been added by some radio stations around the country and picked up by Retail Radio, which services chains such as Best Buy, Subway, Taco Bell and more. It also got a thumbs-up from the blog Pop Wrapped, which tweeted the tune to its more than a million followers.

Bermudez -- who's first EP came out in 2009 and whose music has also been licensed for CBS's "NCAA Men of March" and MTV's "The Challenge: Battle of the Exes II" -- is hoping the song's notoriety will help push "Love & Let Downs" towards a label deal. Meanwhile, he's continuing to work on new music and working to make more breaks happen.

"Y'know, as soon as you get frustrated, something good happens," Bermudez says. "I'm just staying with it and making the best music I can and waiting for the right things to happen."
