DETROIT -- Jason Mraz was digging Detroit on Thursday, November 6.

Literally.

The 37-year-old Grammy Award winner from San Diego, in town to perform Thursday night at the Fox Theatre, spent part of the afternoon doing some volunteer gardening for the Market Garden at MGM Grand Detroit, a two-acre urban farming space across the street from the casino and operated by Keep Growing Detroit. Mraz and some winners of a local radio contest helped dig and sort potatoes and other vegetables and spices being grown in the space, in high spirits despite chilly fall temperatures and a bit of drizzle.

"I do it for selfish reasons, 'cause I enjoy it and I've got a garden at home, but I'm not home very much," Mraz explained. "So this is an opportunity to visit with other gardens around the country, whether it's school gardens or community gardens and continue t learn and continue to be part of the good food revolution that's happening all around the world and also bring that attention to the good food revolution."

Mraz has trooped out to urban and community farms in other cities he's visited, and he says he's buoyed by their growth and proliferation.

"I'm seeing a lot of growing," he said, "and I think a lot of it has to do with social media and technology and more and more people coming out to talk about how easy it is, how great it is, how much of a luxury it can be if you have the space to grow.

"And also the health -- you can regain your health and vitality. You can do it yourself and in your own community and not just get (food) from a centralized food source and from Monsanto seeds. That conversation is definitely alive all over the planet, and it's important we practice what we hear."

Mraz is touring to support his fourth album, "Yes!," which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in July and launched the single "Love Someone." Mraz performs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fox, 2211 Woodward Ave. Tickets are $25-$75. Call 313-471-6611 or visit www.olympiaenetertainment.com.
