Multi-platinum rapper Bow Wow is back to being lil’ again — but only in regards to the places he’s playing right now.
“People think it’s my usual big arena tour, and it’s not,” says the 20-year-old MC, who was born Shad Gregory Moss in Columbus, Ohio, and now resides in Atlanta. “We’re catering to a lot of ... smaller places. I’m loving it, man, just to see the fans’ reaction and getting a chance to perform the new music for them. I’m having a ball.”
The new music comes from his fifth album, “The Price of Fame,” which came out in December and is already certified platinum thanks to the hits “Shortie Like Me,” “I’m a Flirt” and “Outta My System” — the latter about his breakup with singer Ciara. And while Jermaine Dupri is still Bow Wow’s mentor, the protégé served as co-executive producer this time and had more input than ever before.
“I was catching a lot of flack from the hip-hop community,” says Bow Wow, who’s preparing to record a collaborative album with R&B singer Omarion. “A lot of people wanted to know if I was writing my lyrics or if I wasn’t. There was a lot of, ‘Oh, Bow Wow’s not a real rapper ...’
“It didn’t get to me, but it’s almost, like, motivation. I wanted to prove to people ... I can do a lot of things by myself. I can do it on my own. I felt like I did a good job at it.”
Bow Wow, Lloyd, Crime Mob, Sammy, Huey, Jibbs and Shay perform at 7 p.m. Friday (May 11th) at the Fox Theatre, 2211 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Tickets are $78, $52.50 and $28. Call (313) 471-6611 or visit www.olympiaentertainment.com.
