John Pugh says Sacramento’s !!! (pronounced “chk-chk-chk”) prides itself in “operating as a big, organic machine.” The eight-piece group builds its songs from jams, freely mixes genres and pays little heed to conventions or stylistic parameters.
“We like to just give ourselves over to the music,” explains Pugh, 32, a singer and multi-instrumentalist who co-founded !!! in 1996. “A lot of bands play every song exactly how it appears on their record. We struggle to find a way to make every show something where you feel a connection with the audience and feed off it.”
So when !!! — which released its second full-length album, “Myth Takes,” in March — takes the stage, Pugh says the group is “not just there to look pretty and pose and play our songs.” Rather, he explains, “We’re here to have a party with you and turn it into a visceral experience more than, ‘Let’s go watch this band like we watch TV at home.’
“I go to a lots of shows, and everyone’s just, like, watching TV. No one’s really enjoying themselves. They’re just standing there with a really loud television blaring in their face. We need that cycle of energy, where we put something out and get it back from the audience. That sounds kind of hippieish, I know, but it’s true.”
