Los Straitjackets Rock In Espanol

Of the Oakland Press

» See more SOUND CHECK

As its title indicates, Los Straitjackets’ new album, “Rock en Español, Vol. 1” is an almost entirely Spanish affair.

But, bassist Pete Curry promises, you don’t have to speak or even understand the language to dig the tunes.

“I don’t understand as much Spanish as the other guys in the band,” Curry notes. “You don’t really hear the lyrics, anyway; you just hear the song. That seems to be the case from the shows we’ve done so far, anyway.”

Recorded with guest vocalists Little Willie G, Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos (who produced the album) and Big Sandy (who’s on tour with Los Straitjackets), “Rock en Español” is an album the group — which sports Mexican-style wrestling masks on stage — conceived several years ago.

The inspiration, Curry says, was growing up hearing Spanish versions of rock hits broadcast into South ern California by Mexican radio stations, and Los Straitjackets add to that repertoire with their versions of the Kinks’ “All Day and All of the Night,” Larry Williams’ “Dizzy Miss Lizzy” and “Slow Down,” the Coasters’ “Poison Ivy” and others.

The group put 14 songs on “Rock en Español,” but Curry says the “Vol. 1” designation indicates that there’s plenty more where that came from.

“We’re planning on doing more volumes,” he confirms, “just ’cause it’s so much fun. It’s a good thing to do. People need to hear good ol’ music like that. I don’t want to be judgmental, but modern records don’t really sound this good, I don’t think.”

Los Straitjackets with Big Sandy perform at 8 p.m. Thursday (May 10th) at The Ark, 316 S. Main St., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $15. Call (734) 761-1451 or visit www.theark.org.
