The Detroit music community will be paying tribute to a couple of fixtures from the fertile mid- and late-60s at special events this weekend:
* The family of the late guitarist and songwriter Dick Wagner, who died July 30 at the age of 71 from respiratory failure, will gather for a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Rochester Church of the Nazarene, 1799 Walton Blvd, Rochester Hills. Wagner led the bands the Frost and Ursa Major and was also known for his writing and session work with Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Kiss, Aerosmith and many more. A Dick Wagner Memorial Concert will also be held this fall, with details to be announced although former Grand Funk Railroad frontman Mark Farner and Wagner's longtime guitar partner Steve Hunter have already committed to perform.
* A fundraiser for ailing SRC guitarist Gary Quackenbush takes place on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Club 54. The Reefermen, Frijid Pink, Ray Goodman & the Essentials with Tasha Owens and the Rationals' Scott Morgan are slated to perform with Morgan doing double duty as the night's emcee. A variety of musical memorabilia will also be auctioned off to help defray the costs of Quackenbush's medical care. Club 54 is located at 37722 Van Dyke Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is $10.
