The Detroit duo Adult. thinks the title of its new album, “Why Bother?,” is rhetorical.
“I think is says it all,” says Nicola Kuperus, who’s been working with husband
Adam Lee Miller
as Adult. since 1998. “I think it’s just a really weird time right now in music where you sometimes feel like, is there any point? Do people care? Is it worth it?
“And I think to us, our answer is yes. That’s why we put out the records, but we still can’t help but ask ourselves if we should. Is anybody listening, and is it important to other people?”
“Why Bother?,” Adult.’s third full-length album, returns the group to a duo after guitarist Sam Consiglio’s brief tenure. It also marks the first time Kuperus and Miller have recorded in a proper studio, taking their show out to the Key Club in Benton Harbor.
“I never felt like we found the right place before,” Miller explains. “The people who run it told us that they had picked up two or three of our records and just kept listening to it while they were building
the studio. So it was a really good vibe. They really understand where
we’re coming from.”
Kuperus, meanwhile, says that “it was nice to sort of put it in someone else’s hands, in a sense. We always get really fussy about everything and can take forever on stuff. It was a nice freedom to suddenly just be ... the artists and have someone else worrying about the nuts and bolts, like we usually do.”
