Singer-songwriter Steffie Loveless, the transgender musician formerly known as Jam Rag magazine founder and political activist Tom Ness, celebrates the release of her new concept album, “Songs for a Mother of Mine,” tonight at the Octane Photographic Gallery in the basement of the Ferndale Center building, 22750 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Royal Oak-based modern rockers Tripper will celebrate their eighth anniversary Saturday at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. The Matt Keil Band and Tom

Detroit indie rockers Rescue will bring their career to a halt with a farewell show Saturday at the Magic Stick, 4120 Woodward Ave., Detroit. The Pop Project, Russian Circles and LaSalle also are on the bill. A group of local rockers will play Saturday in Redford to raise money for a good cause. Rock For Valerie will raise burial funds for Valerie Yates, a 46-year-old single mother of three from Taylor who’s suffering from terminal cancer. Drop, X=Y, Zen, Shagg Nasty, Soul Theory and the Drag Strippers will be on the bill, which starts at 6 p.m. at the Bullfrog Bar & Grill, 15414 Telegraph Road.
