Metro Detroit gets a new awards show this weekend with the inaugural Peoples Choice Awards, taking place Saturday, May 24, at Lush Night Club & Sports Bar in Pontiac.
The awards are the brainchild of Lush's Lonnie Brown, founder of Two Face Entertainment, a Pontiac-based promotions and events company. "I want to connect with two sides," Brown says. "I want to have that business side but I also want to relate to the community and the neighborhood and do things that are pretty diverse.
For the Peoples Choice Awards, Brown has fashioned a ceremony that will honor winners in 23 categories, ranging from musical performance to hair stylists and tattoo artists. Brown solicited votes on Two Face's Facebook page and says about 3,800 people had already weighed in shortly before the deadline.
The show itself starts with a red carpet "mix and mingle" at 8:45, with the Lucky Brown jazz band performing. The ceremony itself gets under way at 10, hosted by Crystal Johnson, Mel [cq] and Coco Rayne. Black Superheroes, Karema DeJesus, Darwin Vinson and Binx B are among the music acts slated to perform during the show.
Lush is located at 18 W. Pike St. Tickets are $10. Call 248-929-4683 or visit www.facebook.com/lushsportsbarandnightclub.
