The Used’s bassist Jeph Howard says the Utah heavy rock group’s stint headlining this year’s Taste of Chaos tour has been “awesome, dude. It’s been one of the best tours we’ve ever been on.”
And, Howard hastens to add, “That’s for real. I’m not just saying it because we happen to be on (the tour) right now.
“The mood of the band has been up and up and up. And we know all the other guys pretty much from touring with them before, and they’re all good dudes, too. So it’s been great.”
Because he fesses up to being hung over from the previous night’s revelry, we tend to believe him.
Being part of Taste of Chaos is particularly meaningful for the Used, as it brings the group out of a yearlong hiatus. It was certainly a productive time out of the spotlight, however, as the heavy rocking quartet prepared two releases — the live CD/DVD package “Berth,” which came out in February, and “Lies For the Liars,” the group’s third studio album, due out May 22.
It’s also the Used’s fi rst tour with new drummer Dan Whitesides.
All of that, says Howard, 28, has given the group a jolt of fresh energy for what promises to be a busy 2007 — and beyond.
“Our spirits are really high — maybe ’cause we’re back again playing shows, and we’re able to do what we love to do and what we want,” he says. “We haven’t been around for a year now. We took that break, so I don’t think coming back hard is a big deal.
“I really get the feeling people really missed us, so it’s like they can’t get enough, y’know? That’s cool. They could’ve not missed us, too.”
The Taste of Chaos tour, featuring the Used, 30 Seconds to Mars, Senses Fail, Saosin, Chiodos, Aiden and Evaline, plays at 6 p.m. Saturday (March 31st) at Cobo Arena, 301 Civic Center Drive, Detroit. Tickets are $30. Call (313) 471-6611 or visit www.olympiaentertainment.com.
