Chauncey Hollis Jr. is living up to his hip-hop handle -- Hit Boy.
The MC, writer and producer from Fontana, Calif. won a Grammy Award for producing the Jay-Z/Kanye West hit "N***** in Paris and has also scaled the charts with A$AP Rocky ("Goldie"), G.O.O.D. Music ("Clique") and a remix of the Britney Spears/will.i.am single "Scream & Shout." But Hit Boy's primary ambition is to make those hits for himself.
"I feel like my movement is bigger than just production. It's bigger than just writing," explains the 26-year-old artist, who operates his own imprint Hits Since '87 (HSA87). "It's something that needs to be heard by the new generation, by the youth, by the kids.
"I have to get my story out there, and I feel like it's bigger than just me. It's a movement. The world needs to see this talent."
Hit Boy, who was discovered by Polow Da Don on MySpace and has also worked with Detroiters Eminem and Big Sean as well as Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg and many more, is currently working on material for a follow-up to 2012's "HITstory" as well as albums for HSA87 artists Audio Push and K Roosevelt. But he's also getting the word out on this year's America's Most Wanted Tour, even if his own time on stage is small compared to headliners such as Lil Wayne and T.I.
"I just go out and do what I do," says Hit Boy. "I'm definitely noticing more and people getting into what I'm doing. I play a few records that I produced every night, just to refresh them and keep them up to date with who I am and make that connection. It's exciting to see people become fans out of nowhere."
The America's Most Wanted Music Festival with Lil Wayne, T.I., 2 Chainz, Hit Boy and more, plays at 7 pm. Friday, Aug. 9, at Joe Louis Arena, 600 Civic Center Drive, Detroit. Tickets are $49.75-$89.75. Call 313-471-6605 or visit www.olympiaentertainment.com.
