Tool, which is in the midst of making a new album, is certainly a priority for Danny Carey. But Volto!, an instrumental quartet that's just released its debut album, "Incitare," allows the drummer to flex some of his other musical muscles.

"It's the possibilities of improvisation and uncertainty of what can happen at every gig," Carey explains. "It's a lot more experimental, where if I'm doing Tool stuff it's a lot more composed and a lot more thought-out. I grew up playing a lot of jazz fusion music, listening to a lot of Tony Williams and Billy Cobham and Miles (Davis) and stuff like that, and all the prog rock roots I have are kind of applicable in places here.

"So this gives me a lot of room just to freak out and have fun with my friends."

Carey started Volto! nearly a decade ago with one of those pals, guitarist John Ziegler, who he played with in another band, Pigmy Love Circus. They recruited bassist Lance Morrison (Matt Rhodes is the current keyboard player) and played clubs around Los Angeles for many years before, as Ziegler recalls, "We said, 'Hey, maybe we should make a record." And despite tricky scheduling concerns, particularly in Carey's case, the trio has every intention to maintain Volto! as a going concern.

"I think we're going to keep making records -- that's the plan," Carey says. "We'll make records and then sneak in some tours here and there, whenever we can. We want to share it with as many people as we possibly can."

Ziegler, who's Volto!'s chief songwriter, adds that, "I just want to play as much as we can. I love playing with these guys. That's the bottom line. IF we never do anything more than just play in the neighborhood here in (Los Angeles), that would be cool with me. But to have an opportunity to do this (nationally), it's pretty amazing."

Volto! performs Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25. Call 248-544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
