Beyonce is unquestionably the star of the Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, but Luke James -- the R&B singer from New Orleans who's opening many of her North American shows -- is a star on the rise.

James has a successful track record as a writer for Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, Britney Spears and Keri Hilson, but emerging in his own right during the past year he scored a bit hit with "I Want You," which was nominated for a Grammy Award. A second single, "I.O.U.," is climbing the charts, and his debut album, "Made To Love," is expected to drop this fall.

"I feel like my star is getting brighter," says James, 29. "Every day is something new. I'm just basking in the moment and looking forward to what's next, but I feel really good to be in the position I'm in."

Opening for Beyonce, meanwhile, is certainly one of the moments James is enjoying most.

"Oh, it's amazing. The platform is just, like, major," says James, who appeared in Beyonce's video for the song "Run The World (Girls)" and also appears in the film "Black Nativity," which is due out in November. "It's the biggest tour right now. She's one of the biggest artists, if not the biggest artist, and for her whole camp and family to embrace me, it means everything. It just gives me a kind of affirmation for what I've been doing all this time.

"So it's just like another 'aha!' moment, like 'You're doing the right thing.' So it's awesome. I couldn't ask for anything more, really."

Luke James opens for Beyonce at 8 p.m. Saturday at The Palace, Lapeer Road at I-75, Auburn Hills. Tickets are sold out. Call 248-377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
