Current Journey singer Arenal Pineda -- a Filipino native who was discovered by guitarist Neal Schon via YouTube -- says being part of the multi-platinum band is still "half dream and half reality for me." And this weekend fans will get a peek inside that experience.
After playing the film festival circuit, "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" -- a documentary by fellow Filipino Ramona S. Diaz about Pineda's, er, journey with Journey -- premieres this weekend at select theaters around the country (none in the Detroit area) and, come Saturday, March 9, on various On Demand services. The film takes an intimate look at Pineda's rugged pre-Journey life and has full access to his first tour with the band as he improves his English and adjusts from being a club and cover band singer to an international touring artist.
It culminates with a triumphant homecoming concert for Pineda in Manila.
"I want people to see that the miracle, the divine intervention -- it happens," Pineda says of the film. "I want them to ponder on it and the dreams they have for themselves, because that's what I did. I had a hard life. I was really poor at one part of my life. My young years in Manila weren't that pleasant.
"But I never quit. I just moved on. I believed in myself. I knew that somehow, some day I'd become somebody -- but this is bigger than what I was dreaming."
