* The producer of four of the metro areas annual summer festivals is looking for local musicians -- and is giving them an easy way to be considered.
Funfest Productions has set up a portal on its web site, www.funfestinc.com, for bands and artists to submit electronic press kits to possibly play Harley Fest (June 15) and the 7th Annual Stars and Stripes FEstival (June 28-30) at the Freedom Hill Park & Amphitheatre in Sterling Heights, the 4th Annual Uncle Sam Jam July 12-14 in Woodhaven and the 8th Annual Meijer St. Clair Riverfest July 26-28 in St. Clair. Acts can submit photos, music, biographies and other materials to the company.
Funfest will also consider local acts to open for national shows at Freedom Hill, which re-opens this summer after a two-year hiatus.
* Axis Music is holding an all-female singing competition featuring 20 students from its three locations. The contest runs from 1-4 p.m. at the Lucky Strike Sports Bar & Cafe, 44325 Twelve Mile Road, Novi. The winner will receive prizes that include a recording session and equipment. The public is welcome to attend. Call 248-374-3420 or visit www.axismusic.com.
* Amy Gore & Her Valentines, the Howling Diablos, Citizen Zero, Superlast and the Infatuations are among the bands who will play at the Powerful Beard Benefit for Real Detroit Weekly editor Adam O'Connor. The 32-year-old Royal Oak resident has been hospitalized since late November with an as-yet unidentified disease. Proceeds from the show will help defray O'Connor's mounting medical expenses. The concert takes place on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Awesome Jarvis & the Whales and Jennifer Westwood & the Waycross Georgia Farmboys will also perform, with DJ Linda Lexy hosting. Doors open at 7 p.m. A $10 minimum donation at the door is suggested, and there will be a raffle for prizes. Online donations can be made at www.gofundme.com/1vsf20.
