Of the Oakland Press

» See more SOUND CHECK

Longtime local favorites the Howling Diablos staked their claim as one of the metro area’s best live bands with a regular Sunday night tenure at the nowclosed Bear’s Den in Berkley. This weekend, the group journeys to nearby Ferndale to begin a new Sunday residency — at Dino’s, 22740 Woodward Ave. The Diablos will play about 10 p.m., preceded by an opening act each week. There will be a minimal cover charge. Call (248) 591-3466 or visit www. howlingdiablos.com.

Local rappers Doc Waffle, Gambit the MC and Crate Digga will share the stage with Ohioans Envelope and Danger Zone on Saturday at the Lager House, 1254 Michigan Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is $5. Call (313) 961-4668 or visit www.lagerhousedetroit. com.

The Brothers Groove, Johnnie Bassett and other Detroit musicians are coming together on Wednesday at Detroit’s Buzz Bar for the benefi t of Mike Killian, a well-known bartender and bar manager on the local scene who’s battling throat cancer — without health insurance. Organizers plan to give 100 percent of the door proceeds to Killian, plus a percentage of the bar tally that night. Local artists will be selling pieces to raise money for Killian, too. The Buzz Bar is located at 546 E. Larned. There’s no formal cover, but a donation of $5 is suggested at the door. Donations also can be made to the Mike Killian Fund c/o The Buzz Bar, 546 E. Larned, Detroit, 48226. Call (313) 962-1800.
