The Motown Museum is about to get its piano back.

But not before it raises a little money for the shrine before its return -- at a $10,000 per person charity event with Motown founder Berry Gordy, Jr. and Paul McCartney on Sept. 18 in New York City.

The 1877 Steinway grand piano sat in Hitsville's Studio A on West Grand Boulevard from 1967 until July of 2011, when McCartney toured the museum prior to his performance at Comerica Park. Seeing the condition of the piano, McCartney pledged to pay for it to be restored at the Steinway & Sons headquarter in New York, where its strings, hammers and other parts were replaced.

The removed components will be exhibited at the Motown Museum upon the piano's return there in the late fall. An announcement says the piano -- played over the years by Marvin Gaye, Steve Wonder, the Funk Brother's Earl Van Dyke and many others -- will be used for "future performance and educational events."

McCartney and Gordy will both play the piano at the September fundraiser, which will be held at Steinway Hall, with proceeds going to the museum. Invitations and solicitations have been sent to various targeted individuals, but anyone interested in attending can contact the museum at 313-875-2264.

Robin Terry, who chairs the museum's board of trustees, said in a statement that, "We are grateful to be the recipient of such an incredible and generous gift thanks to Paul McCartney and Steinway & Sons. Upon the piano's return to the Motown Museum, our primary goal is to use it to its fullest potential for the City of Detroit, where the piano's legacy will live on and continue to inspire Motown music lovers."
