Detroit's Planet D Nonet will be joined by a couple of special guests at its fourth annual Sun Ra Tribute concert this weekend.
Daniel Bennett from Ann Arbor's NOMO and Detroit d'jembe virtuoso Akunda Holis will be part of the show, celebrating the diverse jazz and experimental music made by the late Sun Ra (ne Herman Poole Blount), while activist John Sinclair will recite some of Sun Ra's poems while the band improvises behind him. The Nonet will also introduce new members Joe Peterson, a Kresge Fellow, on bass, and Michael Malis, who's worked with Dennis Coffey and the Macpodz, on piano
The show takes place at 8 p.m. Friday at Trinosophes, 1464 Gratiot Detroit, Detroit. Admission is free but donations are encouraged. Call 313-737-6696 or visit the Planet D Nonet or Trinosophes pages on Facebook.
