After six albums and a dozen years of touring, Ledisi has learned quite a bit about being effective on stage.
"It's a roller coaster ride," says the New Orleans-born R&B singer and songwriter (full name Ledisi Anibade Young). "It's a WE show, not a me show. It's interaction with the audience; even if there's three people, I'll give the same energy.
"I love it when the audience talks back to me, when there's any interaction. I feed off that. I remember in Detroit once, there were, like, eight men total who just kept coming up and giving me flowers during the show. It was the weirdest thing; I felt like it was a funeral procession or something, but it was very sweet, and I'm very appreciate when fans do that."
Ledisi is still busy promoting her latest album, "Pieces of Me," which came out in June of 2011. She's justifiably proud of its No. 8 debut on the Billboard 200, her best ever, and she's happy to indulge in a little self-congratulations on the set's fourth and latest single, "Bravo."
"That's a song that says you work hard, and it's good to celebrate yourself and celebrate yourself," Ledisi explains. "It has kind of an old 60s vibe to it; it reminds me of growing up and listening to my mom's music and realizing, 'Wow, I DO need to be good to myself' -- even saying 'Shut up!' to people who are mean.
"It's good when you say something like that, but in a nicer way. It may take a minute to sink in, but when it does, it really sinks in."
Ledisi and Eric Benet perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 28 at the Chene Park Amphithatre, 2600 Atwater St., Detroit. Tickets are $30-$70. Call 313-393-7128 or visit www.cheneparkdetroit.com.
