A pair of local filmmakers want to give Cobo Arena its due. But they need help doing that.

Doug Akers and Jake Hall, the director and producer, respectively, of the documentary "The Legendary Cobo," are in the midst of a Kickstarter campaign to raise $45,00 to complete the film they've been working on for more than three years. The duo has amassed a treasure trove of interviews, including Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, who played at Cobo as a Detroit Piston, and music artists such as Kiss, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, the J. Geils Band, Mitch Ryder and members of Journey, Van Halen, Rush and many others.

In addition to Cobo's musical and sports legacy, the film will also chronicle historical events such as Dr. Martin Luther King's inaugural delivery of his "I have a dream" speech, the 1980 Republican National Convention and the "ping pong diplomacy" tournament between the U.S. and China in 1972.

Akers and Hall are offering a variety of donor levels with prizes and premiums attached to each one. Information, a trailer and donation information can be found at www.kickstarter.com/thelegendarycobo. The campaign runs through Aug. 5.
