Po'Girl Figuring Out How To Be A Band

After nearly five years and three albums, the genre-blending Canadian group Po’Girl is fi nally getting the hang of being a band.

“The band lineup has stabilized (during) the last two years,” notes Allison Russell, who co-founded Po’Girl in Vancouver with her then-roommate Trish Klein of the Be Good Tanyas. “We kind of found the magic combination of people, which has really enabled us to progress as a unit.”

The roster — which recently released the new “Home to You” album — includes fellow singer, songwriters and multiinstrumentalists Diona Davies, who joined in 2003, and Awna Teixeria, who arrived in 2004. A Po’ boy, drummer John Raham, rounds out the mix as an adjunct member.

“It just feels really incredible and creatively prolific,” Russell, 27, says, “because all four of us ladies write as well as cowrite. It’s just been a really fun time working together.”

But because all four have other endeavors, Russell says that organizing Po’Girl tours and recording sessions gets tricky.

“It’s not a nightmare,” she says, “but it’s defi nitely a juggle because everyone is really busy. You just prioritize. We made this new album that we’re really proud of, so it’s obviously our priority to tour it, and we make time for that.

“But we try and always take some time between tours to explore the place where we are. So often, you just see the place you stay and the place you play, which can burn people out very quickly. So we try to factor in a little bit of time to hang out and see the city or country where we are, which keeps it fresh for us.”

Po’Girl plays a free show at 8 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 20) at the Ark, 316 S. Main St., Ann Arbor. Call (734) 761-1451 or visit www.theark.org.
