Shaun Murphy released her latest album, "Live at Callahan's," in September. But she still considers this weekend's stop back at "the scene of the crime" to be an official release party, even nine months later.
"We've been touring behind it a little bit, but we never got a chance to go back to Callahan's since it came out," says Murphy, who spent part of the interim on the road as a longtime backing vocalist in Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band. The album and accompanying DVD, in fact, include Silver Bullet bandmates such as Laura Creamer and Barb Payton, as well as the Motor City Horns.
"It was kind of like going home to do a record, and I thought it came out great. It was a wonderful night, seeing everyone there. And it's still, like, No. 40 or something on the Roots Music Report. I see a lot of people come and go on the list, but I've been going up, even after all this time.
"I don't understand it, but I'm loving it."
Murphy, who now resides in Nashville, is "getting ready to get a bunch of tunes together for a new studio recording," with sessions likely to take place in January. Meanwhile, Seger has said he plans to reassemble the band to tour the western U.S. or Australia this fall, but Murphy is taking a wait-and-see attitude on that.
"I heard those rumors too," she says, "but until (a tour) starts, it's just a rumor. I've been around so long with Bob I know that something that likes like it's for sure in the bag is not always for sure in the bag. So I can't say anything. I'll just wait 'til I'm called."
Shaun Murphy and Niecie perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at Callahan's Music Hall, 2105 South Blvd., Auburn Hills. Tickets are $20 and $15. Call 248.858.9508 or visit www.atcallahans.com.
