3 Doors Down has played in the Detroit area a few times since Aug. 2, 2005. But guitarist Chris Henderson says that coming to town still makes the Nashville-based group members recall -- very fondly -- the night that Bob Seger joined them on stage at the DTE Energy Music Theatre.
"That was such a blast," Henderson, 40, says of having Seger join his band for "Landing in London," which he made a guest appearance on for 3 Doors Down's then-current album "Seventeen Days." "Y'know, no one knew if he was going to show up or not. We were planning on doing the song with him, but no one knew if he was going to be there. Five minutes before, he showed up while were on stage and we kind of gave him a microphone and did it.
"That's the way he does stuff, I guess, but it doesn't really matter. It was just great to have him."
It's a different 3 Doors Down that hits DTE this year, however. Original guitarist Matt Roberts left the band in May due to health reasons. He's been replaced by Henderson's guitar tech Chet Roberts, which has made for a smooth transition.
"He's been over there every night for the last three years...so he knows the songs, and he's a great player in his own right," Henderson says. "When all this went down with Matt, (Chet Roberts) was like, 'Give me a couple of hours and let's get together and play these songs. No problem.'
"It wasn't an adjustment at all. Chet does a lot of Matt's old parts, but we're allowing him to do his own thing, too, and he's really easy to play with. So it worked out great -- I just had to get my guitar tech a guitar tech."
3 Doors Down is planning to release a greatest hits album with three new songs and then start work on a new studio album later this year.
