Gogol Bordello frontman Eugene Hutz's journey has taken him from his native Ukraine to New York and, for the past three years, Brazil -- drawn to the latter by, well, what else?
"The women, man, the women!" Hutz, 39, says with a laugh. "It sounds kind of cliche, but that's how everybody's crusade to Brazil starts. And then, of course, I progressed to more sophisticated levels of appreciating the culture and actually became somewhat of an anthropologist about it."
That's the way Hutz goes about things in general, of course, whether it's with the genre-blending gypsy rock he plays with Gogol Bordello or his dance music work and acting in films such as "Everything is Illuminated," "Fifth and Wisdom" and "Wristcutters: A Love Story." For Gogol Bordello's current Radio Hutz Tour he's presenting a special music mix as a DJ before the band hits the stage and is working on both an album of "disposable, electronic, whacked-out music."
For Gogol Bordello, meanwhile, "several albums are ready to be baked," including a set that will focus on the band's acoustic side.
"The writing, the creativity, never stops," Hutz says. "Every person that crosses by me and says something and every car that buzzes by with some kind of nasty beat coming out of it, it's all going into my cooker, man. That's my way. That's my lifestyle and that's my cooker and that's how I do it.
"It just keeps evolving, and there's always something new and cool coming out of it that I've never done before."
Gogol Bordello and Roni Size perform Saturday, May 26, at the Fillmore Detroit, 2115 Woodward Ave. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35, $25 and $20. Call 313-961-5450 or visit www.livenation.com.
