Detroit hip-hop producer J Dilla (James Yancey) is still widely revered six years after his death from TTP at age 32. On Friday, May 25, at Detroit's Magic Stick, the family-owned and operated Rurff Draft Records will premiere its first release, "Rebirth of Detroit," which features new rhymes by rappers such as Danny Brown, Big Tone, Guilty Simpson and others atop Dilla-produced tracks.
Besides the listening party, the evening will include performances by Simpson, Underground Resistance's DJ Skurge, DJ Spinna, Kai Alice, the Philanthropists of Soul and others.
A special 10-inch vinyl version of "Jay Dee's Revenge," with Brown, and "Birthright" came out this week, while both songs will go on sale via iTunes at midnight Saturday, while "Rebirth of Detroit" is set for release on June 12. A new web site, www.officialjdilla.com, has already been launched as a vehicle for new music and other information about Dilla.
The Magic Stick is located at 4120 Woodward Ave. Doors open for the listening party at 8 p.m. Admission is $20. Call 313-833-9700 or visit www.majesticdetroit.com.
