Hot Chelle Rae's sophomore album, "Whatever," came out with a bang thanks to the Nashville pop group winning the American Music Award for Best New Artist in November.

But after a hot first single, the Top 10 and double-platinum "Tonight Tonight," the excitement petered out a bit. But the group is hoping a new single, "Honestly," will rev things up again.

"There's a lot of ways to write breakup songs," says frontman Ryan Follese, 24. "I like the ones where you can kind of feel a little bit of sweet revenge and pretend like you're not affected by it, you know?

"Whenever you're going through any type of breakup or situation like that, the best thing you can do is not think about it. So I wanted to write one of those songs as someone who's not so affected by it, instead of those crazy people who key someone's car or something like that."

"Whatever" also features a number of guests, including Demi Lovato, who sings with the group on the ballad "Why Don't You Love Me?"

"We're big fans of Demi, especially her new record and (the single) 'Skyscraper' when it came out," Follese says. "I knew she was a really good singer, but I didn't know she was that good. She's definitely a powerhouse female singer for my generation and the one below mine.

"When we found out she was a fan of ours, it was easy to pick up the phone and ask her to be on the album. We were on tour and sent the track to her in L.S. She had, like, half a day off and she went in and did it, and I think she crushed it. She's just phenomenal."

Hot Chelle Rae, Action Item and Electric Touch perform Thursday, April 26, at the Crofoot Ballroom, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 day of show. Call (248) 858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
