Pat Benatar has delved into the ethereal in titling her latest tour The Elements Of Five.
Noting that it’s 32 years since the release of her first single, “I Need a Lover,” and of her first big hit, “Heartbreaker,” Benatar explains that “32 years is a form of 23, which is an element of five. It’s a zen Chinese thing, Japanese, too — the five elements in the chi. So that’s how we got the tour name.”
Got it? Well, if not, just enjoy the music, which is drawn from Benatar’s long list of ’70s and ’80s hits such as “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “Fire and Ice,” “Hell is For Children,” “Love is a Battlefield” and many others.
“There’s no agenda,” notes the New York-born Benatar, 58, who resides in California. “We don’t have to promote anything this year. So we’re just out playing and pulling out a lot of different songs we haven’t played in a long time, medleys of things we haven’t played for years and years and years. You never know what you’re going to get.
“And, you know, it’s a different audience every day, so the experience is never the same for us. It doesn’t get routine. I could play ‘Heartbreaker’ till I’m dead, every day, and it’s great fun and I love it.”
Benatar and her husband, guitarist Neil “Spyder” Giraldo, plan to start recording a holiday album this fall, most likely for 2012 release. She’s also working on a novel about the Second Coming to follow her 2010 autobiography “Between a Heart and a Rock Place.”
Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, Sashabaw Road east of I-75, Independence Township. Tickets are $25 and $25 pavilion, $10 lawn. Call 248-377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
