San Antonio-based Paramount Entertainment made a name for itself with the Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular, a multimedia show that lets visuals carry the presentation. But the company’s gone a different route with “The Spirit of Michael.”
This show features a live Jackson impersonator, Raul Rojas, as well as four to eight dancers. “It’s more of a live concert feel with the lasers and the video effects and the lighting backing it up,” says producer Steve Monistere. “For something like this we really need to have the tribute artist and the dancers and whatnot. It just makes it work better.”
“The Spirit of Michael” incorporates about 20 of Jackson’s hits, says Monistere, who was approached to create the show shortly after Jackson’s death in June 2009 and debuted it that October.
“At times the performers leave the stage and you’ve still got a straight-up laser show to some of his music,” Monistere says, “but it really turns into more of a Vegas-style show — and I hate saying that — with all the glitz and the dancers mixed with his kind of rock ’n’ roll laster light show. It’s just the right way to do it.”
“The Spirit of Michael — Laser Spectacular Show” begins at 8 p.m. Friday, July 15, at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, Sashabaw Road east of I-75, Independence Township. Tickets are $20 pavilion, $10 lawn. Call 248-377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
