The members of Taking Back Sunday were taken aback when their third album, “Louder Now,” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart after its late April release.

“It was kind of a surprise,” says bassist Matt Rubano, 29. “I think with, like, Bruce Springsteen and people like that putting out records the same week, we were in complete shock and awe — and humility, as well. We take it as a compliment, but try to stay focused on what we’re doing and not get carried away.”

The modern rock quintet from Amityville, N.Y., has certainly been on an ascent since its 2002 debut, “Tell All Your Friends.” But this time around, Rubano says, the group set out with a specific sonic goal for “Louder Now,” which was recently certifi ed gold.

“We wanted to make a rock record,” he explains. “We wanted to have something that had a really timeless sound to it, and something where every sound on every instrument on it was what we wanted it to be.

“That’s why the title’s ‘Louder Now’; it’s meant to evoke how we took all aspects of our band and amplified them to the fullest extent. We wanted the record to sound over the top and just loud and powerful. We spent a lot of time thinking about, ‘What’s going to make the best sequence of songs? What’s gonna be the best representation of this music we’ve done?’ ”
