Craig Owens is no stranger to the Vans Warped Tour.
The Rochester resident has played the traveling show with his previous bands Chiodos and Cinematic Sunrise, as well as solo acoustic. And this year he's particularly excited to be showcasing his latest group, Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows (aka D.R.U.G.S.).
"I'm to the point now where I'm in the best shape of my life and the happiest point in my life," says Owens, 26, who's been open about his past battles with bipolar disorder and substance abuse. Having a new band, he explains, "makes everything a bit more of a challenge.”
“I feel like I have something to prove. So I'm gonna go out there and give it my all — especially for Detroit, being my hometown and one of the biggest drawing dates for Warped every year.
"So I think walking out there with D.R.U.G.S. is going to be more of a redemption than nerve racking."
Though Owens says D.R.U.G.S.' next album is "in the back of my head," he's still pushing the group's self-titled debut, which came out in February and topped the Billboard Hard Rock chart.
"We have a lot to look forward to," Owens reports. "We're booked throughout the entire year. We have a new plan in motion for some exciting stuff coming up. Right now it's that in-between stage where we're deciding our next single to go with, and then we're gonna go big. So I'm very excited."
The Vans Warped Tour takes place at 11 a.m. Friday, July 8, in the parking lots surrounding Comerica Park, 2100 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Tickets are $34 in advance, $37 day of show. Call 313-477-6600 or visit www.olympiaentertainment.com.
